The group was found by renowned artist, musician, director, actor, producer, filmmaker Doctor Shirley Cheechoo in 1984. It was developed to provide a forum for Aboriginal youth to see their own lives, and their own stories on stage in a way that just was not accessible in mainstream society.

De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group is one of the longest running Aboriginal Theatres in Canada, and the only Aboriginal Theatre operating on a reserve. The company has recently constructed a 125-seat theatre on Manitoulin Island, making the company the first and only Aboriginal company in Canada to own and operate their own space. Currently the company is made up of 16 full time students and employees, as well as 6 Board Members, and many volunteers.

In addition, a state of the art recording studio has been recently incorporated. The studio offers services in track recording, both music and film post production, production and sound design, in studio video and promotional productions, radio commercial and jingle services, and also gives the option for field recording.
