National Indigenous Peoples Day

After 2022’s return of in person events and celebrations, Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory will see 2023 of Summer Solstice/National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations. 

We encourage all visitors to come take part in the vibrant cultural displays and we invite everyone to enjoy this year’s event

We have partner with the Wikwemikong Heritage Organization and the Indigenous Culinary of Associated Nations to bring you a day of education, cultural learning, food/art, powwow, and live music.

Guests can take in information sessions on the Creators Game Lacrosse, learn some history on Manitoulin Island, or Odawa Mnis, learn land-based teachings such as trapping demonstrations and fish fileting stations, and much more.

The pavilion will feature a variety of workshops including a Magic Manitou Magic Show, Interactive Traditional Dancing Demonstration, Lacrosse Presentation, Wiigwaas Jiiman Presentation, and a Craft session for families, kids, and attendees.

“A Taste of Odawa Mnis” that features modern techniques mixed with traditional preparation methods of soulful and comfort foods, prepared by local Chef Joseph Shawana and Metis Chef Jenni Lessard, both representing the Indigenous Culinary of Associated Nations.

Wikwemikong Heritage Organization Powwow with grand entry at 12pm with dance specials happening throughout the day.

Band Member Recognition hosted by Chief and Council.

Community Feast hosted by the Indigenous Culinary of Associated Nations with local Chef Joseph Shawana and Metis Chef Jenni Lessard.

The evening will be capped off with exciting and electric musical entertainment. Bizhaak! Join us!
